garden oaf
« new plants and new garden design tomatoes in may »

I am a big dumb oaf.
In April, I was attempting to tie up my only two tomatoes (sweet cherry, and green zebra) to the stakes in the earthbox, and I managed to snap the sweet cherry’s main stem off… There went my first 5 cherry tomatoes.

I planted sweet basil, persian basil, catnip, and lemon balm seeds. They germinated and grew well, until they started disappearing. Over Twitter, Daphne Richards from Central Texas Gardener suggested that I use BT, because it could have been caterpillars eating the seedlings.

I also planted giant white moonflower vine and “pearly gates” morning glory seeds. I thought the whites would look good together, and blend nicely with the violet morning glory volunteers that are going to be spreading more every year if I don’t stop pulling them.

Mistakenly, I only planted one bronze fennel, let’s see how long he lasts before he gets eaten up completely.

One of my favorite things to do, is to look down on the garden from my second story master bedroom window. It’s a good way for me to look at the whole composition. I took some photos of the developing design from above.

When seedlings disappear then the culprit is almost always bound to be slugs snails or pill bugs. Caterpillars don’t usually come along until the plant is well established. You can buy a garden friendly product called sluggo plus which will take care of all those. Sluggo will only take out slugs and snails. You must get the plus one. If you don’t want to get this then use grapefruit skins and other tasty treats like asparagus to trap the the pill bugs. They really are the worst offenders in the garden. I’ll bet that tomato plant came back and you are now picking toms. Don’t forget to plant now for the fall crop of toms. and if you need lemon basil I can give you plants a plenty along with Mexican marigold mint. You need to come along to our blogger meets.
